Blood pyruvate and lactate levels during oral and intravenous glucose tolerance tests in diabetes mellitus.

چکیده
1. Blood pyruvate and lactate levels during oral and intravenous glucose tolerance tests are described in obese and non-obese non-diabetic, maturity-onset diabetic and insulin-requiring diabetic groups of women. 2. Mean fasting blood pyruvate levels were similar in non-diabetic, maturityonset diabetic and insulin-requiring diabetic subjects of similar degree of obesity. Mean levels were higher in the obese groups of non-diabetic and maturity-onset diabetic subjects compared to those of non-obese subjects of similar degree of glucose tolerance. 3. After oral glucose administration similar mean increases of blood pyruvate levels above the fasting base-line were found in non-diabetic and maturity-onset diabetic subjects matched for degree of obesity. 4. Peak oral glucose tolerance test blood pyruvate levels were generally delayed in the maturity-onset diabetic subjects and mean blood pyruvate levels were elevated above those of the non-diabetic subjects during the later stages of the test. Qualitatively similar changes occurred during intravenous glucose tolerance tests. 5. Mean blood lactate/pyruvate ratios were similar in non-obese and obese nondiabetic and maturity-onset diabetic groups of subjects and changed little after oral glucose administration.

Metabolic studies in unaffected co-twins on non-insulin-dependent diabetics.
Forty-eight out of 53 non-insulin-dependent diabetic identical twin pairs were concordant for diabetes. In the five discordant pairs the diabetic twin had only recently been diagnosed. Oral glucose tolerance tests were carried out on the unaffected twins of the five pairs and on matched controls. Fasting concentrations of blood glucose (5.5 +/- 0.6 v 3.7 +/- 0.3 mmol/l; 99.1 +/- 10.8 v 66.6 +/-...
متن کاملThe relationship between pregnancy weight gain and impaired glucose tolerance test
Impaired glucose tolerance has several adverse effects on growing fetus. In this study we evaluated the effect of excessive weight gain during pregnancy on the risk of glucose intolerance in pregnant women. A case-control study was conducted through which the glucose tolerance status after 100 gram oral glucose intake was compared between 60 pregnant women with maximum 10 weeks of gestation and...

متن کاملElevated serum human growth hormone and decreased serum insulin in prediabetic males after intravenous tolbutamide and glucose.
Serum human growth hormone (HGH), serum immunoreactive insulin (IRI), plasma free fatty acids, and blood glucose were measured during intravenous glucose and intravenous tolbutamide tolerance tests in 13 normal and 13 prediabetic (offspring of two diabetic parents) males, closely matched for weight and age. Only prediabetics with normal glucose tolerance during oral, intravenous, and cortisone-...
